First impressions of The Chop House, Tsim Sha Tsui – tasty burger, shakes you can spike

After a mojito that was more ice than drink, and a pedestrian burrata, our meal got better. Crispy pork belly was everything you could ask for from the dish, and the signature burger was a treat, with perfect French fries

The Chop House recently expanded from Causeway Bay to the Miramar Shopping Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui. While the original branch (in Soundwill Plaza II – Midtown) is bright and airy, with floor-to-ceiling windows and red highlights, its Kowloon counterpart is moodier, with dim lighting and a blue-green palette.

The rosemary and grapefruit mojito (HK$98) was refreshing, although it had a very high crushed-ice-to-drink ratio. Other diners had milkshakes (HK$65) that can be spiked (for an additional HK$95) with Jack Daniels, Bacardi gold rum, or Frangelico hazelnut liqueur. These calorific “moo juice” drinks sound like meals in themselves.

Our meal began with an underwhelming burrata (HK$98). The soft cheese should have been creamy, but wasn’t, making the rest of the dish – sliced tomatoes with basil pesto – pedestrian.

Crispy pork belly (HK$108) was quite substantial for two to share. A thick chunk of pork had crisp skin that contrasted with the tender meat. The spiced plum, ginger and rhubarb relish, and the sharp apple radish salad were a nice touch.
For our main course, the

was quite a mouthful, though we enjoyed each bite. The perfectly prepared French fries, were crisp and not overseasoned.

There are some decadent desserts on offer, and we tried the chocolate fudge cake (HK$70). It was dense, moist and chocolatey, and great with vanilla ice cream.
