New take on sake - sparkling, fruit-flavoured, and in a can - to beat the Hong Kong heat

Premium sake brand’s sparkling jelly sake comes in three fruity flavours, and the apple version is certainly refreshing – and the alcohol content is about the same as a beer. Catch it while you can

Looking for a refreshing alcoholic drink to beat the Hong Kong summer heat? A Japanese company has combined sparkling sake with fruit juice and jelly.

Hakutsuru is a traditional premium sake brand with over 270 years of history. It has shaken things up with a creative new drink called Hakutsuru Purupuru Sparkling Jelly Sake, in three flavours – plum, apple and peach.

The sake, which comes in a 190ml can and has an alcohol content of 3-5 per cent, goes down quite easily. I tried the apple flavoured one and it was very refreshing, especially with the jelly in it. When drinking from the can, it’s best to shake it lightly to be able to taste the jelly.

Hakutsuru Purupuru Sparkling Jelly Sake costs HK$13.90 per can and is available at more than 200 Circle K stores in Hong Kong until July 6.
