Newly opened Little Creatures, Kennedy Town – house-brewed beer and bites

Newest addition to waterfront Kennedy Town Praya’s line of posh drinking and dining spots offers a full menu of burgers, steak, clams and beer from its own brewery. The service needs tweaking, however

Kennedy Town continues to gentrify at a fast clip, with Little Creatures being the latest addition to the dining scene. Located by the water and handily next to the fire station is the neighbourhood restaurant which has its brewery on the premises.

The name refers to the yeast that’s used to make the beer, and the craft breweryhas a “beer school” to encourage newbies to learn more about the process.

There are 10 beers on tap and one cider. We tried the Little Creatures Pale Ale (HK$45 for 285ml), a refreshing light beer, while the Orchard Crush Cider (HK$54/285ml) has a sweet apple flavour that makes it tempting to drink quickly.

Staff here need more training on dealing with inquiries and clearing plates, but on the whole are very friendly. Our dishes came in rapid-fire succession – it would be nice if they were paced a bit slower.

Our dinner started with the grilled halloumi (HK$100) salad, two large slices of cheese on a bed of cherry tomatoes and lettuce with a light pomegranate molasses dressing.

Mac & cheese.
A side dish of mac & cheese (HK$75), served in a small skillet, looked like the perfect comfort food, but it was more creamy than gooey. Nevertheless we loved inhaling the truffle scent.

For a hearty option, look no further than the 6oz Angus burger (HK$145), which we requested be sliced in half. In addition to the meat and bun, there was smoked cheddar, bacon, and barbecue sauce, all of which held together nicely between bites. The patty was thick and cooked medium rare.

We ordered the steamed blue mussels (HK$165), but what arrived was a shallow bowl of Australian clams instead. We asked the server about this, but he didn’t tell us beforehand there weren’t any mussels available – another table had taken the last order. As he placed the plate down on the table, he asked us if clams were OK – a little too late. We like clams, but these were disappointing: many still had sand in them, and they were drowned in the butter sauce, taking away the natural sea flavours. This was not taken off the bill to make up for the mistake, nor were we asked why we didn’t finish the dish.

There are several tempting options for dessert. We wanted to try the pear tarte tatin (HK$135), but it was unavailable, so we opted for the house-made cake (HK$75), which turned out to be a massive slice of blueberry cake with blueberry sauce and scoop of mascarpone. The cake was dry and crumbly, so it was helpful to have the sauce and mascarpone. We would have appreciated a warning about the portion size. But being an Australian restaurant, perhaps we should have known.
