Beer flavoured or spicy hot ice cream? Cafe on the 1st adds a chilly twist to its buffet dessert

The Excelsior Hong Kong in Causeway Bay is thinking outside the icebox with ingredients such as Sichuan peppercorn, wasabi and lime, and tom yum goong

For the adventurous out there who like interesting flavours and ice cream, Café on the 1st in The Excelsior Hong Kong can give their taste buds a surprise.

The dinner buffet is serving two ice cream flavours daily until mid-October and they are fun and creative.

Some of the ice creams are hot, with flavours that include black pepper and dark chocolate, wasabi and lime, and curry and mango.

Then there are the creative ice creams: beer with bacon, French toast with maple syrup or Black Forest with cherry compote.

We were given three to sample and we had to guess what they were. I thought the first one had a hint of Yakult, but I was completely wrong. It was cinnamon apple crumble. Ah yes, I taste it now…

Then the next scoop had a mild spicy flavour with a hint of lemon grass that was definitely tom yum goong.
Cafe on the 1st is using some unconventional ingredients in its ice creams.

The last ice cream wasn’t shy and quickly revealed itself to be Sichuan spicy, made with Sichuan peppercorns that had that strong spicy initial taste, followed by the numbing sensation. We could only have one or two spoonfuls as it packed quite a punch.

The dinner buffet is HK$528 per person on Mondays to Thursdays, and HK$558 per person on Fridays to Sundays and eves of and public holidays.
