Tje six types of grilled corn at Honeymoon Dessert de Avenue.

Restaurant review: Honeymoon Dessert de Avenue, Causeway Bay – savoury shortcomings

Hong Kong’s popular Honeymoon Dessert branches out again, this time serving up savoury dishes, although there is a honey-topped pizza

The popular homegrown Honeymoon Dessert has opened a restaurant that focuses on savoury food. It’s not the first time the brand has gone beyond the Chinese desserts they’re best known for, and this latest departure, Honeymoon Dessert de Avenue, follows the recent establishment of two other shops: Sweetish by Honeymoon Dessert in Yuen Long and Juicery by Honeymoon Dessert in Causeway Bay.

This latest spot – in upscale Hysan Place, Causeway Bay – has wooden furnishings and feels spacious.

There are six kinds of grilled corn on offer. We liked the traditional Mexican grilled corn (HK$58). Roasted with cheese and spices then slathered with mayonnaise, it was slightly sweet and spicy. Less successful was the durian and cheese grilled corn (HK$58), which was too sweet and heavy.

Traditional Mexican grilled corn.

Spaghetti with ox cheek braised in red wine sauce (HK$88) was made with Australian ox cheek and a delicious sauce with tomato, red wine and carrots. Spaghetti with smoked salmon and seafood in cream sauce (HK$88) was too dry and needed more sauce. Both pasta dishes seemed expensive as the portions were small.

Honey and cheese pizza.
Honey and cheese pizza (HK$68) was unusual, as it was sweet and savoury. In addition to the tomato sauce and cheese (cheddar and mozzarella), the pizza is drizzled with honey. It needed to be cooked longer, to crisp up the base.
Grilled romaine caesar salad.
The biggest let-down was the grilled romaine caesar salad (HK$58). The lettuce was roasted with cheese, then served with small bowls of bacon, shredded cheese and breadcrumbs, along with a lemon wedge. It looked interesting, but wasn’t easy to eat. We’ve tasted much better versions.

In short, the new savoury venture of Honeymoon Dessert does not live up to the sweet offerings beloved by locals for two decades.
