Two Two Chicken, a 30-year-old Korean fried chicken chain, has opened its first Hong Kong outlet in Tai Hang, providing another choice for those who love the Korean delicacy.

The chain has more than 300 outlets in South Korea. The sauces, seasonings, chefs and fryers are all from Korea.

As it’s currently on a trial opening, the menu is limited. Diners can order a half chicken (five pieces for HK$78) or a whole one (10 pieces for HK$148).

Korean fried chicken in Hong Kong - just add beer and friends

The fried chicken served here seems like a healthier choice than versions served at other shops: the skin is less crunchy because the batter is thinner.

We tried the sweet and spicy chicken. The sauce was appetising and went well with the fleshy Brazilian chicken.

The heavy coating of minced garlic in the garlic chicken gave it a strong taste but also gave the skin an unpleasant damp, soggy and sticky texture. Spicy chicken – served without sauce – was dry.

For non-chicken dishes, we liked the golbang-i (HK$88) – Korean cold noodles served with conch and vegetables. The sauce looked fiery, but it wasn’t too spicy. The sesame-flavoured sauce went well with the noodles.

We found the Korean rice cakes, served in bright red chilli sauce, too spicy, and the rice cakes were too chewy.

The waiter came to our table often, asking our opinions about the food. After the trial opening, the menu will be expanded and the cooking styles amended.

The drinks menu lists beer and mocktails. Snowing mocktail (HK$68) was worth trying. Made from pineapple juice, grapefruit, honey and coconut milk, the sweet and sour drink was refreshing, and soothed our palates after the greasy and filling chicken meal.
