Restaurant review: Omega 3 in Hung Hom – good plum wine and a huge menu of Japanese classics
From sushi and sashimi to steak and Japanese dumplings, this tiny restaurant has it all. The dishes are cheap, but the presentation could be better
Omega 3 in Hung Hom feels more like a bottle shop with a few Formica tables than a restaurant – and for good reason. Despite an extensive menu ranging from well-priced sushi and sashimi to sirloin steak, it’s the cabinet of Japanese spirits that makes Omega 3 worth a visit.
Its vast sushi menu starts at HK$10 for two pieces, but you can also order from pictures on the wall and a laminated sheet of hot specials such as Japanese dumplings and US beef rib-eye. Feeling slightly overwhelmed by the number of choices, we opted for a seven-piece assorted sushi set (HK$68) that consisted of salmon, yellowtail, tuna, eel, duck breast, cuttlefish and crab stick. The fish seemed fresh enough, but at this price, it obviously wasn’t mind-blowing, and the presentation wasn’t especially appetising.
The same was true of the nine-piece assorted sashimi set (HK$50), with salmon, tuna, snapper, herring, octopus, geoduck, surf clam and sweet shrimp. The salmon tasted fresh, and the tuna was thickly sliced but didn’t melt in the mouth.
The highlight was the roasted fatty salmon (HK$20 for two pieces), which were delicious and cooked just enough so that the inside was still raw. The okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake, HK$35) was well flavoured, although some of the octopus pieces were quite tough. Most disappointing were the chicken skewers (HK$20 for two), which were coated in an overly sweet sauce and roasted until the meat was dry and chewy.
Omega 3’s plum wine selection ranged from about HK$40 to more than HK$200. Our pick was the tart Rainbow plum wine (HK$40 for 200ml), which went down very smoothly.
Although the food was unremarkable, it wasn’t a wasted trip. With its friendly staff and slightly slapdash decor, the vibe felt casual and relaxed – and we thoroughly enjoyed the plum wine.
