Grilled M8 wagyu sirloin with ponzu from newly opened Hon10 in Admiralty’s Pacific Place mall.

First impressions of Hon10 in Admiralty – relaxed, casual Japanese dining

A straightforward menu offers standard Japanese dishes mixed in with a few inventive creations, and all arrive at a good pace in this Pacific Place outlet

Pacific Place has another casual dining option, with the opening of Hon10. We were in good company the evening we went, as just across the dining room was Canto-pop princess Kelly Chen in an oversized trench coat having an early dinner with a friend.

Interior of Hon10.
The decor here is funky, and the restaurant also serves as an art gallery with a mural of two geishas using chopsticks to feed each other, and a random selection of art on the walls for sale from between HK$2,100 and HK$35,000.

The menu is straightforward, offering sashimi, rolls, chirashi don, seared beef, and okonomiyaki.Creative dishes include deboned chicken with a blue cheese sauce, and matcha chocolate fondant.

Chirashi don.
We appreciated the pace of the dishes – they didn’tserve everything all at once, so we didn’t feel rushed. The HON10 chirashi don (HK$258) arrived first, featuring slices of various fish including tuna, salmon and yellowtail, with a giant prawn, salmon roe and sweet egg omelette, all laid over nori and rice seasoned with sesame. This would make a good, substantial dish for a solo diner.
Tuna maniac roll.
Next came a small portion of tuna maniac roll (HK$218 for six pieces, HK$388 for 12 pieces). The outer layer was made from various parts of the tuna that came out in shades ranging from light pink to deep fuschia.

After a brief break, the grilled M8 wagyu sirloin (HK$218) arrived, but it wasn’t sizzling hot. The sliced beef was on a bed of raw onions that would have been better if they’d been cooked, and the dish was accompanied with four condiments: wasabi, mustard, fried garlic chips and a very spicy green chilli sauce. However, we preferred dipping the somewhat chewy beef slices into the ponzu sauce to enhance the umami flavour, although it made the beef even cooler.

Sesame panna cotta.
For dessert, the black sesame panna cotta (HK$58) was a disappointment. Weexpected it to have a silky smooth texture, but instead it was thick and grainy.A black sesame sauce that resembled thick calligraphy ink was painted on the plate.

There are many non-alcoholic drink choices. The yuzu caplis (HK$45) was refreshing, although without much carbonation, while the bottle of Mitsuya citrus cider (HK$40) was on the saccharine side.
