If you happen to be in Tuen Mun or are willing to make the trek westward, there are worse places to stop for a reasonably priced Japanese meal than Teishoku 8.

The restaurant, decked out with warm wooden panels and grey brick walls, is tucked away in the corner of the K-Point shopping mall, and is popular enough to have people lining up for seats.

Its menu offers a selection of traditional Japanese fare – from udon and grilled mackerel to sashimi and teriyaki steak.

Teishoku has rows of tables, and a large wooden table for communal dining. In the corner is a self-service station where diners can have as much as they want of rice, tea and miso soup.

The food was colourful and luxurious for its price. The centrepiece of the deluxe seafood donburi set (HK$58) was a bowl of fresh sashimi slices atop radish slices and rice. Arranged next to it was a small bowl of miso soup, a three-tray platter of side dishes such as wakame seaweed salad, and a scoop of pudding. It wasn’t the most dazzling sashimi we’ve tasted but it was fresh-tasting and affordable.
