Shake Shack pop-up in Hong Kong to give taste of things to come before official opening in the city

On April 14, the Atrium at IFC will be transformed into Madison Square Park – where Shake Shack first started in 2001 – for the day, where customers can try the US burger chain’s signature meals

Hong Kong fans of Shake Shack won’t need to wait until the end of April or early May when the famed American burger chain is set to open at IFC Mall – they can bite into their favourite burgers on Saturday, April 14.

On that day, the Atrium at IFC will be transformed into Madison Square Park – where Shake Shack first started in 2001 – and from 11am to 4pm customers can try signature items such as the ShackBurger, ’Shroom Burger and crinkle-cut fries that can be washed down with ShackMeister Ale and Shack red and white wines.

When asked about prices of the food on the day, William Lou, general manager of Shake Shack Hong Kong, said they haven’t finalised them yet even though the pop-up is two weeks away.

He explains it was actually Shake Shack that contacted Hong Kong Maxim’s Group four years ago about opening here, though the contract wasn’t signed until last July.

The local operations and management teams went to New York for training – including Lou – to learn how to make the burgers and the importance of sourcing the correct ingredients. Lou says that what makes the American burger brand so popular is the use of natural ingredients like Angus beef and cage-free chicken that have no added antibiotics or hormones.

Most of the ingredients will be imported from the United States, including the beef, fries and buns that are made from potato flour, giving them a chewy texture.

When the outlet opens in IFC Mall, the menu will also include hot dogs, frozen custard, applewood smoked bacon and root beer.

Lou says there are plans to open 14 outlets in Hong Kong and Macau by 2027, while 25 are planned in China by 2028.
