Favourite Hong Kong restaurants of The Entertainer’s Brian Mak – from Sichuan with a view to brunch in a low-key setting

When Mak is not busy managing lifestyle app The Entertainer, he is out trying new food around the city. Here are his favourite places to dine, including takeaway joints and venues for special occasions

E-commerce and digital marketing whizz, Brian Mak is the Hong Kong-born general manager of The Entertainer, a lifestyle discount platform app.

I like all types of cuisine. I enjoy all food that is thoughtfully prepared with high quality, fresh ingredients. I try my best to avoid any heavily processed or pre-packaged foods that come in a packet, bottle or bag.

Some of my favourite dishes include the chicken salad from La Rotisserie (various locations including 33 Hillier Street, Sheung Wan, tel: 9791 9045) and the poke bowls from Pololi (various locations including 39 Graham Street, Central, tel: 2755 8099) for a simple and healthy lunch or takeaway snack.

If I’m looking for places to hang out with friends, I go to Table by Sandy Keung (8/F, The Pemberton, 22-26 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan, tel: 2815 2367). They serve fresh sustainable seafood in a modern and intimate setting.

I also like Shore Steak (3/F & 4/F, The L Place, 139 Queen’s Road Central, tel: 2915 1638) for their dry-aged beef, and Bib n Hops (three locations including 2/F J Residence, 60 Johnston Road, Wan Chai, tel: 2882 9128), a contemporary Korean joint led by chef Alvin Leung from Bo Innovation, for some Korean rice bowls and fried chicken.

If I have visitors from the US or Europe, I take them to Qi House of Sichuan (2/F J Senses, 60 Johnston Road, Wan Chai, tel: 2527 7117), a Michelin-starred modern Sichuan restaurant. Their other outpost in Tsim Sha Tsui, Qi – Nine Dragons (20/F Prince Tower, 12A Peking Road, tel: 2799 8899), has arooftop bar with a fantastic view of the harbour

I live in Pok Fu Lam so I go to Kennedy Town quite a lot for a low-key brunch. One of my favourite spots is Praya Waterside Eatery (New Fortune House, 3-5 New Praya, Kennedy Town, tel: 2796 6004) for wholesome dishes like pancakes and eggs Benedict. They have hearty portions and a great airy space with a nice buzz that makes you want to hang out.

My all-time favourite place for a special occasion and indulgent dinner is Amber (7/F, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, 15 Queen’s Road Central, tel: 2132 0066). Chef Richard Ekkebus has never failed to impress.
