Favourite restaurants of a Hong Kong jewellery designer in Macau
From a delicious dessert tea set with 10 different sweet items to healthy Portuguese dishes, Dora Tam knows what tastes good
Jewellery maker Dora Tam was born in Hong Kong but now lives in Macau, where she runs the Dora Tam Design Shop.
I go out about twice a week for dinner. My mom cooks the other times so I eat at home a lot. But I enjoy being out in the company of friends and chatting with them more than eating.
I am Buddhist so I am mostly vegetarian and do not eat red meat at all, but I do love desserts, coffee and having drinks. Most of my friends aren’t vegetarians, so I just order some vegetables and rice for myself. I try to accommodate them and won’t insist they abstain from meat.
One of the places I love in Macau is Windows Restaurant at the Four Seasons (Level 1, Four Seasons Macao, Cotai Strip, Estrada da Baia de N. Senhora da Esperanca, Taipa, tel: +853 2881 8822). I go there for meetings, spending time with friends, and even have lunch and dinner too.
Favourite Hong Kong restaurants of The Entertainer’s Brian Mak – from Sichuan with a view to brunch in a low-key setting
The setting is very comfortable, relaxing and beautiful. My favourite thing to order is the dessert tea set with 10 different sweet items. Sometimes I even have it for a late lunch while I am meeting with someone.
For visitors, I might take them to Tromba Rija at the Macau Tower (Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre, Largo da Torre de Macau, tel: +853 2896 2878) for traditional Portuguese dishes. The restaurant is big, so even a 20-person party is fine. The signature dish that everyone tries is the suckling pig.
For a more casual meal, I enjoy The V. Club (Shop G-I, La Baia No.1, A11 Avenida Comercial de Macau, Praia Grande, tel: +853 2822 8166). It’s mainly Chinese-style vegetarian but with some fusion veggie dishes too. I like to order the mock barbecue platter and the mock sweet and sour pork with gluten instead of pork. The soups are very nice too.
For something fancier, I would go back to Windows, but I will also go to Heart Bar (Ascott Macau, No. 339 Rua Cidade de Braga, Nape, tel: +853 2822 8523). It is on the second floor of the Ascott Macau and has an open terrace. I like it outside, where it has a Thai resort feel, with a water feature and trees. The crowd is very young and they love the place. I like the cocktails and champagne, and the red and white wine is OK too. I like variety.
Sometimes I do miss Hong Kong. When I used to live there, I liked going to Knutsford Terrace to meet my friends. Wildfire (2 Knutsford Terrace, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 3690 1598) is one of the places I remember that was pretty good for drinks and dinner snacks.
Hong Kong wellness entrepreneur shares her favourite restaurants – for Italian, Chinese, Japanese, health lunches, and desserts
Also, I like Veggie Spinner (144 Tung Lo Wan Road, Tai Hang, tel: 2802 6126). The girl who runs it does all these healthy, colourful and beautiful salads. They only have about four tables but they do delivery service.
