Rendang, laksa: Singapore and Malaysian cuisine for less than US$12 at Malacca Cuisine in Sheung Wan
- Malacca Cuisine serves up tasty classics that arrive in minutes, despite being so busy
- Also on the menu were Hainanese chicken with bak kut teh, satay dishes and vegetable noodles
Malacca Cuisine in Hong Kong’s Western District has the feel of a neighbourhood favourite, with well-priced classics from Malaysia and Singapore served quickly.
Dishes on their extensive menu hail from both sides of the Johor Strait, an area where a blend of cultures and spices came together over centuries of migration and trade to create a diverse cuisine.
In that spirit, we tried the restaurant’s Singaporean laksa, a Hainanese chicken dish, and a Malaysian-Indonesian favourite, chicken rendang.
Although the restaurant was busy, our food was on the table just minutes after we ordered, and the booth seating gave us ample space to tuck in.
The chicken rendang with rice (HK$62 at lunchtime; prices are slightly higher at dinner)was served on a wicker plate with greens and fried ikan bilis (anchovies) with peanuts. The bone-in chicken was stewed and served with a spicy, coconut milk-infused sauce, which made the meat all the more juicy.
