ReviewGreat, crunchy tempura at friendly Tempura Satoi in Tai Hang

  • Giant prawns, sardines, sea urchin, asparagus and ginkgo all came in a crisp batter that wasn’t too oily
  • Non-tempura dishes included Japanese field snails and assorted pickles and vegetables

My friend and I stood outside Tempura Satoi, wondering if we should go somewhere else. This unassuming little restaurant in Tai Hang looked, well, too unassuming. There were no other customers eating there, and it looked just like any other neighbourhood spot.

We’re glad we stayed.

At most restaurants specialising in tempura, the best way to go is to order one of the sets. Sadly, the ones here were not tempting – we were there for tempura, not appetisers, salads, sashimi and dessert, which all the sets offered, bar one – and that one offered the least tempura dishes of any of them. So we ordered à la carte.

The only non-tempura dishes we tried were the Japanese field snails (HK$78) and assorted pickles and vegetables (HK$138). Both were excellent. The snails – served in their shells, with toothpicks to pry them out – were fleshy and firm, in a very lightly spiced dressing.
