Thai and Vietnamese meals for less than US$12 under one roof in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
- Bangkok Chiminh serves up tasty good quality dishes from Thailand and Vietnam
- Classic dishes include spring rolls, Thai shrimp cakes and beef brisket
You can probably tell from the name, Bangkok Chiminh serves a sampling from both Vietnam and Thailand.
The concept makes it especially good for those who can’t decide which of the two southeast Asian cuisines they want.
On a recent visit, we were in this camp and tried a bit of both, ordering a Thai shrimp cake appetiser, curry, rice and hot and cold Vietnamese noodle dishes.
The golden-fried Thai shrimp cake (HK$28) was a good start. The breadcrumb on the four cakes was perfectly crisp without being the least bit oily, and paired nicely with a sweet chilli sauce.
We enjoyed the yellow curry beef brisket rice (HK$68), which wasn’t pegged to one cuisine on the menu, but leaned more toward the Vietnamese curry preparations. The creamy coconut flavour was rich and well seasoned, but not too spicy. The generous portion of tenderly cooked brisket impressed us, but there wasn't much in the way of vegetables, other than the garnish on the plate. There was a mixed veggies yellow curry option on offer.
