Vegetarian Indian restaurant Veda in Central is hit and miss: go for the naan tartine

  • The naan tartine with its complex flavours was the stand-out dish, while the red lentil dahl with Greek yogurt was classic and delicious
  • But several dishes were either average or flawed, such as pani puri that were too large and hard, and an aloo gobi with soggy cauliflower

Food lovers with long memories still lament the closure of Veda, the fantastic contemporary Indian restaurant that was way ahead of its time when it opened in 2002. It closed in about 2008.

The new Veda, located in the Ovolo serviced apartments at 2 Arbuthnot Road, is just steps away from its old location at number 8. But this isn’t the old Veda.

The original was large and serene; the new place is small and hip, with a bar at one side of the room. And while the original served Indian food – for vegetarians and omnivores – the new one is strictly vegetarian, and covers a broader range of cuisines.

Nepalese ricotta and spinach momos came as five to a serving (HK$78) and were plump with a rather bland filling, although the smoked chilli and tomato achaar which was served as an accompaniment made them much better.
