Located near Hong Kong’s famous mutton hotpot restaurant Dong Lai Shun, the Northern Kitchen gives diners in the shopping district of Tsim Sha Tsui more choice for traditional Beijing dishes.

We came to the restaurant for a weekday lunch. As soon as we sat down, we were served a trio of appetisers – jellyfish in sesame oil, refreshing slices of marinated cucumber and meat jelly, which had a nice bouncy texture.

We ordered two sets (HK$80), each including two slices of Peking duck with paper-thin pancakes, a bowl of noodles from several options, and dim sum. Keep in mind, at this price, you’re not going to get the impressive display of the chef slicing the duck meat and crisp skin in front of you.

To accompany the Peking duck pancakes, diners can choose two toppings (honeydew melon strips, cucumber strips, scallions and purple onion), plus sauces (orange peel jam, garlic sauce, peanut butter and traditional Beijing sauce).

For one set, we chose the classic combination of Peking duck pancakes with Beijing sauce, scallions and cucumber strips. Although the duck skin was a little fatty, the ingredients gave the pancake a rich and complex flavour. For the other set, we went for more unusual toppings – honeydew melon strips and peanut butter – which turned out to be a bad idea as everything tasted too sweet.
