If you haven’t kept up with the recent restaurant openings in Hong Kong’s Central business and entertainment district, here’s our pick of the new arrivals to refresh your memory.
Kinship
At Kinship, the one-page menu had lots of dishes we were interested in trying and with the exception of the first one served – a disappointing hamachi crudo – we loved the others.
Two vegetarian dishes stood out among the meat: Grandpa’s roasted carrots – featuring different types of carrots cooked to varying degrees – and roasted cauliflower “Peking duck style”, which was creative and delicious.

Somm
The menu at Somm is brief: four “bites”, five starters, four mains, three sides and five desserts. There was also a separate list featuring Australian black truffles.
The kadafi-fried taiyouran egg with sour cream and smoked pike perch roe had crisp pastry contrasting with a perfectly done, very runny egg, while for the side dishes, garden peas à la Francaise took the humble pea to another level.

Louise
Louise is a new Hong Kong venture by Julien Royer, co-owner of Singapore’s two-Michelin-star Odette. It’s meant to be a casual spot – there are no tablecloths, and you keep your knife throughout the meal – but the prices are more high-end.
The Hong Kong frog legs with parsley and garlic crisps was fantastic, with meaty, tender frog legs served on a dark green parsley purée. Seasonal shellfish with fennel and seaweed butter was also excellent.

Nove
The menu at Nove has two main sections – dim sum and Chiu Chow specialities – with all the dishes available throughout the day.
The pan-fried conpoy turnip cakes were some of the best we’ve tasted, with hand-sliced pieces of the sweet, tender white radish and just enough starch to bind the ingredients together. The big surprise was elm fungus, black fungus and assorted mushroom dumplings which were far more flavourful than I expected them to be.

Cornerstone
The Cornerstone menu is brief: six starters, six mains and three desserts, although it does have daily specials.
Our steak sandwich with wagyu bavette, red onion, rocket and mustard mayonnaise was delicious because the ingredients were good: puffy ciabatta, rare slices of tender meat, peppery young rocket leaves and a creamy mayo. We enjoyed our other dishes too – just don’t order the tagliatelle.
