ReviewSuper steaks, beef tartare and even chicken breast at new Hong Kong restaurant Associazione Chianti in Wan Chai

  • The Tuscan beef tartare had a deliciously pure flavour while the Florentine steak was rich and beefy
  • Even the chicken breast was very good, perfectly cooked and served with an amazing brown butter sauce

It’s pretty obvious from the name that the Black Sheep restaurant group’s newest establishment, Associazione Chianti, focuses on the cuisine of the Chianti region in Tuscany.

It’s a convivial place (probably more so for our table, because my guest and I were recognised), with funny, friendly waiters, a refrigerated meat display at the entrance, candle-wax-covered Chianti bottles serving as candle holders, and great music playing in the background.

We visited after the restaurant had been open only a week, but the establishment was running smoothly.

Taking pride of place on the menu is the meat. The beef comes from the United States, not Italy, but is prepared in Italian fashion, and is reasonably priced.

It would be best to come in a group of at least three to share the meat plus a few other dishes. In addition to the beef in various cuts and sizes, there’s also pork, lamb and chicken breast.
