Restaurant review: stunning Spanish octopus and wild pigeon at Amelia in Tsim Sha Tsui

  • This modern European restaurant has a tempting menu and comfortable seating, but the food is the stand-out
  • The original restaurant is in San Sebastian in Spain’s Basque Country, but don’t expect tapas or paella

Cuisine: modern European

Price: about HK$485 per person without drinks or the service charge.

Ambience: the restaurant is expensively fitted out, with comfortable chairs, large enough tables, and the occasional whimsical touch, such as a small Spider-Man looking down from one of the shelves.

Pros: the doors to the alfresco area overlooking Victoria Harbour were open, letting in a nice breeze. The menu is tempting, and there were many dishes we wanted to try, but there were just two of us.

Cons: there was a long wait between our starters and mains – at least 20 minutes. They were out of two of the four desserts offered on the menu.

Recommended dishes: we ordered three dishes from the section of small plates. First up was the chicken liver pâté with rosemary flatbread (HK$88). The pâté was smooth, rich and intense, drizzled with a large amount of delicious olive oil. The flatbread turned out to be focaccia, and would have been better with less rosemary because the herb was a little too strong.
