Price: HK$290 per person without drinks or the service charge
Ambience: quiet, as you’d expect in these times, but the soundtrack had a good, diverse mix of tunes.
Pros: the menu offers some unusual and more creative dishes that you don’t see on offer at other Indian restaurants. We had a hard time deciding what to eat.
Cons: the dishes came whenever they were ready, not necessarily the starters first, then the mains.

Recommended dishes: the minced lamb in the pao keema (HK$148) wasn’t as complexly spiced as other versions we’ve tasted, but the meat was a hot, mild and flavourful mixture that we piled onto the slightly sweet toasted buns. Gunpowder chicken (HK$148) came as succulent bites of meat with a sauce that, again, was quite mild. Our only complaint about the lamb seekh kebab (HK$138) was that the moist, delicious, perfectly spiced meat could have been a little hotter.
We liked the two vegetarian dishes we ordered. Punjabi chole bhature (HK$138) was a dish of lightly spiced chickpeas served with a delicious, puffy bread. Spicy mustard greens (HK$138) were complemented by another enjoyable bread, corn and gram (chickpea) flour roti.

The dessert of gulab jamun (HK$68) was warm and sweet, with a gentle flavour of cardamom.
What else? Gunpowder is part of the Mayfare Concepts group, which also runs the Gaylord and Namo Avant Thai restaurants.

Gunpowder in Wan Chai has a tempting menu of interesting and unusual dishes. The ones we chose arrived in random order and one wasn’t quite hot enough, but all were delicious and beautifully spiced.
