The South China Morning Post’s 100 Top Tables 2022 is celebrating a milestone – its 10th anniversary – this year. Considered the definitive guide to the best fine dining in Hong Kong and Macau, the book features 100 of the best restaurants in the two cities. Greeting the guide’s launch, Gary Liu, the Post ’s chief executive, said: “100 Top Tables highlights Hong Kong’s exceptional culinary culture with an annual guide, curated by our editorial panel for connoisseurs of fine cuisine and executive dinners. “This 10th edition honours and celebrates Hong Kong’s F&B industry, which raises international standards of excellence every year, despite the world’s ongoing challenges. “Cuisine is a defining feature of Hong Kong’s heritage, and the diversity of culture and talent represented among this year’s winners showcases the city’s vibrant cosmopolitan atmosphere.” This year, 100 Top Tables features eight categories: Chinese, Contemporary, French, Italian, Japanese, Steak and Grills, Macau, and Bars, the last of which is a category that made its debut in the 2021 guide. As we enter the third year of the pandemic, the food and beverage industry continues to face difficult challenges. The reintroduction of a ban on dining in restaurants after 6pm during Hong Kong’s fifth wave of Covid-19 infections has been another setback for executive dining, but 100 Top Tables celebrates the fortitude and resilience of those in the industry. “Hong Kong’s vibrant dining scene is a stellar example of [the city’s] can-do spirit, versatility and passion,” says Winnie Chung, editorial director of specialist publications. “Despite a most difficult few years, Hong Kong food and beverage stalwarts have valiantly fought on through changing restrictions and market conditions to continue making Hong Kong one of the culinary capitals of the world. It is our privilege to honour their efforts and talent.” Liu echoes the sentiment. “We are especially proud of the resilience, adaptability and innovation shown by F&B enterprises, who truly exemplify the Hong Kong spirit.” There are 21 new entrants and three re-entries on this year’s restaurant list. The new entries are Mián , Wing , Yuè (Causeway Bay) and Yue (Tung Chung) in the Chinese category; 181 at Fortnum & Mason and Whey in the Contemporary category; Le Bec Fin in the French category; Estro and Giacomo in Italian; Kushiro, Masa Hong Kong, Sushi Ikkon, Sushi Wadatsumi, Sushi Yonjugo and Zuicho in Japanese; Rex Wine & Grill in Steak and Grill; and Imperial Court, The Huaiyang Garden, The Manor , Vida Rica and Wing Lei in Macau. The three re-entries are L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon , Whisk and Cuisine Cuisine. The list of restaurants is selected by a dedicated editorial panel that assesses existing winners alongside new restaurants throughout the year. Panellists judge the restaurants’ service, ambience, and most importantly, food. Bonus points are given for private rooms and drinks selection. 100 Top Tables 2022 has introduced a number of new categories to the award list as well. “In an effort to reflect the changing landscape and priorities of diners and restaurateurs, we have also added three new awards for Sustainability Hero, Best Wine List, and Best Bartender, in addition to our awards for Best Chef, Best Rising Star, Best Pastry Chef, Best Ambience, and Best Service,” says Chung. This year, Best Chef goes to Maxime Gilbert of Écriture . The Amber alumnus has continued to deliver luxurious Japanese-inspired French dishes this year, after winning the one-year-only Finest Delivery award for Écriture in 2021. Best Pastry Chef goes to Rin Horiuchi of Tirpse. Best Rising Star was awarded to Aven Lau of Bâtard . “I’m extremely honoured to be named Rising Star by the SCMP . This is great motivation for me to strive to be better, every day,” says Lau. Bâtard made its first appearance in 100 Top Tables last year. Best Ambience goes to Estro, a new addition to 100 Top Tables , and Best Service goes to Chaat, whose chef Manav Tuli was awarded Rising Star last year. And now for the three new awards: Roganic , which won Best Service for the last two consecutive years, took home Sustainability Hero this year for its continued commitment to delivering outstanding farm-to-table menus that highlight locally sourced, organic ingredients. The newly minted category is reflective of how the origins and traceability of food is becoming a growing priority on diners’ minds. Meanwhile, the other two new categories place the spotlight on Hong Kong’s drinks scene, with Amber claiming Best Wine List and Argo’s Lorenzo Antinori named Best Bartender. 100 Top Tables provides the reader with an impartial overview of each restaurant, including information on the cuisine and ambience. There is a shortlist of signature dishes and the price of corkage, as well as amenities like valet parking and alfresco dining. Addresses, phone numbers and hours of operation are also provided. 100 Top Tables 2022 is available to print subscribers of the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong, and a VIP list of business owners, listed companies, professionals, entrepreneurs and C-suite readers.
