When Amit Sharon meets people at dinner parties, he introduces himself not as a pilot, but as a hummus maker. “On the side, I fly planes,” he specifies.

For much of the past three years, Sharon has dedicated himself to perfecting his hummus recipe. Now he has launched The House of Hummus, a line of Middle Eastern dips and breads, in Hong Kong.

Born in Tel Aviv to Israeli parents, Sharon grew up in Hong Kong, his parents having moved there when he was 11 months old.

“Deep down inside, I’m just another confused Hong Kong third-culture kid that is from everywhere and nowhere at the same time,” he says. But that doesn’t mean his Israeli roots aren’t strong.

While growing up, The House of Hummus founder – or “chief hummus officer”, as he calls himself – visited Israel every summer to see extended family, and hummus was a mainstay on the dining table.

Cooking was also an integral part of Sharon’s life, like getting dressed in the morning, he says.
