Who invented them? That is disputed, but the Belgians have a strong claim. They love their fries so much that they are available on every corner, and the people in Belgium consume more than most nations and discuss them deeply at every opportunity.

How can you make fries at home that taste just as good as those from the takeaway? Two chefs share advice on how to enjoy tasty and healthy fries.

People who make fries at home usually buy them frozen as they are convenient and quick. They do not take much time to prepare, as you take the fries straight from the package and put them in the oven or fryer. Thanks to freezing, they also keep for longer and are easy to store.

However, you have no control over the type of potato and fat used, nor any additives.

“You have to keep testing until you find the brand you like,” says Annegret Hager, a consumer protection advocate in Germany, and the flavour often cannot compete with home-made fries.
