Hong Kong’s bar scene is going through trying times, with a wave of major closures rocking the industry’s heart in Central this year.

Liberty Exchange Kitchen & Bar’s 15-year run came to an end on March 14, followed by speakeasy Stockton, which closed in May after 12 years in business. Then, The Envoy called it a day in June after nearly a decade.

The Daily Tot, a Caribbean-inspired bar, closed its doors on December 2. The fan favourite was known for its focus on rum, cocktails and fine spirits in homage to Royal Navy sailors’ tradition of drinking a “daily tot” of rum.

Similarly, speakeasy Foxglove is set to close by the end of this year. The bar, which has been hidden behind an elegant umbrella shop on Ice House Street for the last 10 years, draws customers with its 1950s-inspired glamour, contemporary dim sum and nightly live jazz music.
“I always enjoyed watching people’s faces light up when they discovered the umbrella that unlocked the secret door – a childlike wonderment as customers discovered what felt like a new world,” says Shakib Pasha, a co-director of Foxglove.

“The best thing we can do is give as much notice as possible,” he adds.
