On the Menu | Is 2026 the year of the cabbage? How the vegetable is being hailed online
Overcooked and underappreciated in many countries, cabbage has been identified by Pinterest as an emerging food trend this year

Growing up in a Chinese household, I never found it hard to eat my greens. That is why, even as a child, I never understood the mass hatred towards broccoli and carrots – until I saw how they were being boiled to a mush, stripping them not only of flavour but of any discernible form.
Some people enjoy broccoli when it is masked in a cauldron of melted cheese, but I will have it stir-fried in a flashing hot wok with plenty of garlic any day. As for carrots, I was never a fan of the cooked variety, but give me a pot of ranch dressing for dipping and I will be happy as a bunny.
That’s why it is with much joy, and more than a little bemusement, that I see cabbage is finally getting its moment in the spotlight online.
As is typical at the start of a new year, food-trend predictions are being churned out en masse, and the humble cruciferous vegetable has received its roses for 2026.

Pinterest, a leading barometer of global trends based on what users browse and share, has identified the hardy, fibrous veg as an emerging food trend this year.
