Hong Kong’s coffee scene is most certainly one of the finest in the world, with a growing number of cafes that go beyond superficiality to bring top-tier coffee sourcing, refined technique and unique drinking experiences. The speed at which cafes open, too, is enough to give you whiplash.

The city has its fair share of international names, from California’s Blue Bottle Coffee to Dubai’s Roasters Specialty Coffee House, which recently opened in Central on Hong Kong Island. But this month, we are highlighting five new coffee spots that have deep local roots.

Opened in collaboration with Commons Lab, a multifaceted research and development collective, Ditto is not your average coffee shop. Created by Sophie Chan Hin-ki, a coffee sensory judge, and Alky Ma, a tea, water and olive oil sommelier, Ditto takes every aspect of tea, coffee and alcohol seriously but wraps it up in a calm and welcoming space in Sai Wan’s South Lane.

So far, the matcha coconut cloud – coconut water with a fluffy whisked matcha topping – has been the crowd-pleaser, along with pour-over brews featuring beans from Hong Kong-based roasters such as Black Sugar Coffee.

During its soft launch, Ditto is open on weekdays from 9am to 6pm, and eventually aims to serve mocktails and cocktails.
