Venetian Macao hosts third wine-and-dine festival
Expanded event now in its third year features wine appreciation classes, cooking classes, dozens of stalls and wine pairing dinners
It’s third time the charm for the Macau Wine & Dine Festival festival, which in its first two years was quite small and barely worth the excursion from Hong Kong.
This year the event not only features an expanded 38 booths showing food and wine from restaurants and wine merchants across Macau, there are more entertainment and wine dinner choices.
There’s also a series of wine classes. Lectures range in subject from looking after your wine and decanting it properly to explaining wines from Spain, Italy and Portugal. Classes are HK$50.
Macau resident and veteran of many food and wine shows, David Wong, went to the opening night and says that there are more choices this year but there’s enough space for “everyone to enjoy the wine without pushing and shoving, unlike Hong Kong”.
Entry is free but food and drink samples cost HK$10, payable with coupons.
The range of participating restaurants includes Aruna, which operates two Indian outlets in Macau, Fish Me (fish and chips, meat pies) and BarCelona Tapas and Rice (not just tapas but also grilled chorizo and cheeses).
Wong especially recommends the restaurant-like set-up at BarCelona and the “great tapas”.
If you are looking for a more substantial meal, four Sands restaurants are hosting wine pairing dinners. Copa Steakhouse’s features Californian and Australian wine; Golden Court pairs contemporary Cantonese with Californian, New Zealand and French bottles; Dynasty 8 pairs opulent Cantonese fare with wines entirely from the Nikolaihof winery in Austria; and Portofino in the Venetian has a Piedmont wine dinner menu.
You can also hear samba at Fogo Samba, a Brazilian steakhouse, DJs in a lounge dedicated to Spanish food, and various jazz bands.
The fun continues with a Korean cooking class for adults and baking classes for children.
