The classic Belgian dough creations are catching on in Hong Kong, sometimes with a twist. Best of all, whether sweet or savoury, they're always inexpensive. The SCMP's 48 Hours team have reviewed three new waffle shops on Hong Kong Island just in the past year. Why not sample them for yourself and decide who makes the best? Click each restaurant name to open our reviews.

Waffling Beans, Kennedy Town

Categorised into sweet, savoury and the in-between, the Belgian Liege waffles are made using a cast iron press imported from Belgium. The menu also has some dishes in larger portions, which are best shared among a few friends.

Waffle House, Causeway Bay

For those who don't have a sweet tooth there are savoury offerings such as the waffle topped with pan-fried smoked bacon.

Waffills, Causeway Bay

Belgian chef-owner Joeri Schreurs … came up with a sealed version where fillings, both sweet and savoury, are tucked neatly inside

Aside from these waffle specialists, you'll find the Belgian treats on plenty of menus. Here are a couple more places 48 Hours found waffles ...

Boomshack, Central

The menu lists dishes such as chicken waffle … Desserts such as the Nutella banana waffle are as indulgent as the savoury dishes

Coffee Alley, Causeway Bay

Although we liked the food, service and ambience, we probably won't go back because of the long queue

And who could forget this towering treat from 48 Hours' Men vs Food: Hong Kong?
