LIFE

By the time I get to …

…Wayanad, I’ll have walked a mere 45km around Bangalore and Mysore. The intensity picks up as I move to 9.6km a day.

… Kozhikode, where Vasco Da Gama arrived in 1498, I’ll be on 13km a day and should have walked 202km.

… Malappuram, a centre of religious learning, wildlife and trekking, I aim to be on 16km a day. I’ll try walking up some small hills and see the effect on my ankles, knees and thighs.

Kochi (formerly Cochin), via Ponnani and Thrissur, a trading centre, settled by Syrian Christians, Jews, Chinese, Arabs, Japanese and Gujaratis. The end of week target is: 424km.

… Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, once known as Trivandrum and its 91 listed attractions, via a tea plantation at Munnar, I should have walked 537km.

… Kanyakumari, India’s southernmost point and great trekking territory and then Thoothukudi, a major modern port, I should have walked 650km.

…. Rameswaram, a centre of enormous importance in Hindu mythology, and Thanrangambadi (formerly Trankebar or Tranquebar) a former Danish colony, I’ve promised to be very tough on myself and walk 19km a day.

… Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) and its famous French cooking and Madurai – known as the city that never sleeps, where I might try and learn kabaddi, I should have walked 1,056km.

…Tiruchirappalli – a former citadel and site of many temples – I may try and test the assertion that a 10km walk down an Indian street is actually a 16km walk, due to swerving oncoming humanity. End of week target: 1,190km.

… Thanjavur – more temples and history – if technically possible, I will walk through 10km of countryside to the temple at Thirukandiyur. This week involves a punishing 24km-a-day pace to reach the target of 1,368km.

… Bangalore, via another stay in Wayanad, I should have done two 40km treks, one or two days apart. By the end of the week I should have walked 1,450km.
