Little Bao chef May Chow on how diet and exercise changed her life, and helped her remain calm during turbulent times
- Chow, the owner-manager of restaurants Little Bao and Happy Paradise in Hong Kong, says changes in her work and personal life made her reconsider her priorities
- Going to the gym, and adopting a mostly keto diet, have helped her take back control of her life and embrace a new relationship with food
Despite recent upheaval in her work and personal life, Hong Kong chef and restaurateur May Chow decided last April that she was ready to usher in even more change – to her health.
Although the 35-year-old had already been relatively fit – she ran regularly and took part in marathons – she wanted to feel like she was taking back control of her life. The one thing she could control was her body.
“I’m never going to have more time, so that’s when I started to prioritise fitness in my schedule,” she says. “Work used to be more important, so meetings would override something else [I wanted to do]. Now if I have a gym session, I can’t show up for that meeting, so I change that meeting to another time. That way everyone knows those are my fitness hours.”
