Despite recent upheaval in her work and personal life, Hong Kong chef and restaurateur May Chow decided last April that she was ready to usher in even more change – to her health.

Her hectic work schedule and changes in a long-term relationship made Chow, the owner-manager of restaurants Little Bao and Happy Paradise, reconsider her priorities. “I felt like I was so focused on work that I lost a lot of all those connections with other things in my life, and it really hit me.”

Although the 35-year-old had already been relatively fit – she ran regularly and took part in marathons – she wanted to feel like she was taking back control of her life. The one thing she could control was her body.

“I’m never going to have more time, so that’s when I started to prioritise fitness in my schedule,” she says. “Work used to be more important, so meetings would override something else [I wanted to do]. Now if I have a gym session, I can’t show up for that meeting, so I change that meeting to another time. That way everyone knows those are my fitness hours.”

Although Chow had been slim before she started working out seriously, she had been hiding a belly under her loose T-shirts. At a recent visit to ATP Personal Training in Central, though, Chow chose to wear a fitted T-shirt – revealing her flat stomach.
