Following the recent Brewing Love and The Potato Lab, Tastefully Yours once again combines food and drinks and the Korean countryside in what is increasingly looking like a trend in the K-drama industry.
Here we have Kang Ha-neul – recently seen in Squid Game season two and currently lording over the box office charts in the surprise hit Yadang: The Snitch – playing Han Beom-woo, conceited heir to the family-run Hangsang conglomerate which lords it over South Korea’s fine-dining scene.


Beom-woo runs a slick Seoul restaurant that has earned one Diamant star – the show’s version of a Michelin Guide star – but his brother’s restaurant has two stars. Their domineering mother will not be happy until one of them earns a third star, the highest accolade.
Pitting the siblings against one another, she promises to pass the reins of Hangsang to whoever achieves the rare distinction first.
Beom-woo is confident he can win this race with the help of his star chef Jang Young-hye (Hong Hwa-yeon, Buried Hearts) and the hot new dish she is about to add to the menu.
But then Beom-woo’s assistant discovers a restaurant in Jeonju, a town in the southwest of the Korean peninsula renowned for its food – including its famous bibimbap.

The assistant travels to Jeonju to investigate, and as soon as he walks through the doors of the cosy restaurant he butts heads with the headstrong Mo Yeon-joo (Go Min-si, Sweet Home) who runs it.
He wants to try its bibimbap in order to assess the competition. That is easier said than done, since the meticulous Yeon-joo will only cook with the very best ingredients, which means secretly haggling with exclusive distributors or foraging in the mountains for mushrooms.
Beom-woo’s life takes a turn when his brother pays off another restaurant owner to fake a suicide attempt and expose Beom-woo for blackmail. Beom-woo is fired and loses control of his restaurant.
Desperate for a new angle but also recognising Yeon-joo’s talent, he strikes a deal to invest in her restaurant.

The snag is that she will only sign if he spends a month working there with her. What she does not know is that he is planning to steal her recipes after completing his demeaning month as a member of the restaurant’s staff.
Tastefully Yours does not offer much in the way of narrative surprise. It is clear from the opening week’s episodes that romance will slowly blossom between the pair, and that their relationship will both withstand Beom-woo’s high ambitions and bolster Yeon-joo’s latent ones.
The trajectory of this 10-part series may not be in doubt, but that is beside the point. Tastefully Yours is intended to soothe our daily woes with a clean and simple story and the presentation of many delectable dishes.
In that respect, despite its structural similarity to recent shows like The Potato Lab, this series is more reminiscent of the big-screen healing drama Little Forest, which was all about showing beautifully photographed home-grown Korean food.

The show was created by Han Jun-hee, a film and television director known for D.P. and Coin Locker Girl. These days, he is making a name for himself as the purveyor of series that embrace and amplify K-drama formulas, such as high-school fight drama Weak Hero.
Adherence to formula is a necessity in Korean television, but the key to successfully crafting a new version of something we have seen a thousand times before is the balance between novelty, familiarity and charm.
Tastefully Yours finds its novelty through its beautiful food and rustic Jeonju locals. It mostly gets a pass thanks to its lovingly rendered clichés; the charm is provided by the locale and the leads.
The versatile Go – most recently seen as the psychotic femme fatale in The Frog – has a good handle on the brilliant but stubborn Yeon-joo, while Kang, generally a more performative kind of actor, leans a little harder into caricature with Beom-woo to deliver the show’s comedy.

Once Beom-woo is firmly stuck in Jeonju – his mother takes away his company car and cancels his credit cards – the cast begins to fill out with locals.
These include Kim Shin-rok (Hellbound) as Jin Myung-sook, a sassy cook Yeon-joo hires against Beom-woo’s wishes, and Yoo Soo-bin (Weak Hero) as a youth trying to get Myung-sook to return to the kitchen of his father’s establishment.
Light and delectable, Tastefully Yours is never less than diverting. The short episode order bodes well for what is to come.
