Looks can be deceiving, and Mi-ji and Mi-rae are counting on it. These are the twin sister protagonists of new Korean drama series Our Unwritten Seoul, both portrayed by Park Bo-young (Melo Movie).
These twins are so identical that even their mother cannot tell them apart, but in many other respects they have grown into very different young women, each with their own problems and desires.


When they were young, they would switch places if one of the sisters was better suited to a particular task. But when their mother caught them, she cut Mi-ji’s hair to tell them apart once and for all.
The twins are now 30 years old and do not live in the same city; they have not even seen each other in over a year, yet they still seem to be bound by their mother’s dictum.
Mi-ji still has short hair, although she has dyed it blonde, and still lives with her mother while working odd jobs as a cleaner and farmhand to make ends meet. She used to be a brilliant track-and-field athlete, but a badly twisted ankle suffered during a competition put paid to her athletic dreams.
The long-haired Mi-rae has always been the bookish one who excelled at academics. Now she lives in the big city, where she has a stable and high-paying job at a public financial institution.

She uses her money to help her mother back home, and she pays the bills of her grandmother’s nursing home, although Mi-ji is the one who physically takes care of her, visiting the home twice a week.
Mi-rae shows all the signs of being the stable one of the twins, the one who made it, the one whose mother always brags about her to other people in the village. But, once again, looks can be deceiving.
Ostracised by her colleagues and worked to the bone, Mi-rae has lost her taste for life. She is not ready to entirely give up on that life just yet, but things are bad enough that she jumps out of a third-floor window in the hopes of injuring herself and scoring some time off work.
Mi-ji, who was distraught at the state of Mi-rae when she met her for coffee that afternoon, appears in the nick of time to grab her hand as she drops behind the window frame, only for both of them to fall.

Thankfully, neither is seriously injured, but Mi-ji senses that Mi-rae needs her help, even though she is not asking for any.
She recalls their childhood swapping scheme and suggests doing the same thing again, but on a bigger scale. Mi-ji will move up to Seoul, get some hair extensions and clock in at Mi-rae’s office, while Mi-rae will slink back to the countryside and cut her long hair.
Both look the part of the other, but it takes them some time to learn to play the part as well.
The more extroverted Mi-ji initially draws a little too much attention at work. After not studying the briefs on her new office colleagues which the diligent Mi-rae prepared, she is soon suckered into a difficult assignment to convince a recalcitrant old woman to sell her restaurant.

Mi-rae’s wobbly cycling draws a few stares from the villagers, but for the most part she has it easy as she starts a job at a strawberry farm working under Han Se-jin (Ryu Kyung-soo, Itaewon Class), who never knew Mi-ji.
Besides their ailing grandmother, the only person who might be able to tell the twins apart is big-city lawyer Lee Ho-soo (Park Jin-young, The Devil Judge), who was their classmate in school.
Ho-soo and Mi-rae were the best students in school and it was rumoured that they dated, but in Our Unwritten Seoul we mostly see Ho-soo and Mi-ji together.
Mi-ji’s tomboyish attitude, coupled with her lack of awareness about Ho-soo’s medical conditions, puts a strain on their relationship early on, and there has long been some awkwardness between them.

Now they are both in Seoul, they get to spend a lot of time together. Ho-soo’s law firm has been representing Mi-rae’s company in a case of misconduct she initiated against them – the reason everyone hates her in the office.
Clearly delineating her two characters, not to mention their roles as each other, Park deftly pulls off complicated performances, capturing the vulnerabilities and strengths of Mi-ji and Mi-rae in a confident and character-driven drama.
