After playing a celebrated surgeon (Hospital Playlist) and a star private academy instructor (Crash Course in Romance), Jung Kyung-ho returns to the small screen as a lawyer, but not the kind that occupies the corner office of a penthouse law firm.
In Oh My Ghost Clients, Jung plays Roh Moo-jin, a labour rights lawyer struggling with his own labour woes – he needs money for rent. But, as the title implies, help will soon come from the most unexpected of places.


Moo-jin believes he has hit the big time when his friend, played in a cameo by Jung’s Hospital Playlist co-star Kim Dae-myung, gets him to quit his job and invest big in cryptocurrency.
His friend dies almost immediately, and with him dies Moo-jin’s financial hopes. His wife also leaves him. His former boss, another friend of his, then suggests he consider becoming a labour lawyer, as specialised jobs guarantee steady business.
Moo-jin once again follows a friend’s advice and gets certified, only for his former boss, who had promised him a job, to get embroiled in a workplace harassment case.
A third friend then suggests he strike out on his own. Thoughtlessly, he does so, setting up shop in a shabby office with his sister-in-law Na Hee-joo (Seol In-ah, Business Proposal) serving as his office manager. Fortune continues to elude him, but not his bills, which start to pile up.

With the help of Hee-joo’s YouTuber friend Go Gyeon-woo (Cha Hak-yeon, Castaway Diva), Moo-jin starts to shake down shady businesses. This ploy works until Moo-jin almost succumbs to a workplace accident at a factory.
Almost, because he meets a celestial figure in limbo who asks him to take on a job in return for staying alive. All he has to do is become a labour rights lawyer. The problem is that Moo-jin’s new client is already dead, and he is sitting right in front of him.
There is something light and fluffy about Oh My Ghost Clients, no doubt thanks to its high concept, genial cast and waggish humour. Yet it isn’t satisfied with merely being easy-going entertainment.
This is a show that has much to say about where South Korea came from, where it stands now and where it’s headed, and none of it is hidden in symbols and subtext – it’s all right there out in the open.

For starters, take the lead character’s name, Roh Moo-jin, which is a nod to one of South Korea’s most famous figures, the late president Roh Moo-hyun, who rose to prominence as a human rights lawyer defending student protesters during the oppressive 1980s.
After passing the exam to be certified as a labour lawyer, Moo-jin is devastated to learn that the job he was counting on has disappeared.
He drinks with a friend along Seoul’s redeveloped Cheonggye Stream. They reach Sewoon Plaza, a commercial market dating back to the 1960s that became notorious for its tenants’ violations of workers’ rights. Inebriated, he talks to a bronze statue of Jeon Tae-il, a textile worker who famously set himself on fire in protest at horrific working conditions.
A drunken perambulation turns into a mini tour of South Korea’s spotty record on labour rights.

Then there’s Gyeon-woo’s ridiculous Superpatriotism YouTube channel, which deliberately preys on men who “rely on patriotism to boost their low self-esteem”. Far from a joke, this references a very vocal minority in South Korea who can be easily manipulated by politicians with exaggerated nationalist viewpoints.
Get-rich-quick schemes and struggling small businesses, phenomena that plague modern Korean society, also undergird this story.
Despite his intellect and charm, Moo-jin is burned by both, first when he is suckered into quitting his job in favour of a cryptocurrency scam, and then when he launches a business that performs so poorly he routinely has to hide from his landlord.
Business eventually picks up, but only thanks to supernatural intervention.

It should be no surprise that Oh My Ghost Clients is no mere legal-themed fantasy drama, given that it is directed by Yim Soon-rye.
Active for close to three decades, Yim was the first woman director to forge a legitimate career in mainstream drama, one filled with series that have often played up social issues.
Yim once again demonstrates her skills with her latest show, which pleasingly balances comedy, sentimentality and social awareness.
Oh My Ghost Clients is streaming on Viu.
