Following Netflix’s Melo Movie earlier this year, a filmmaker once again hesitates to follow in their father’s footsteps in the quiet and introspective drama Our Movie, starring Namkoong Min as the director and Jeon Yeo-been as an actress with a terminal illness.
Last seen in the sweeping period romance My Dearest two years ago, Namkoong plays Lee Je-ha, a filmmaker struggling to create a follow-up to his hugely successful debut.


His first film was an acclaimed melodrama that launched the career of its actress, Chae Seo-young (Lee Seol, Between Him and Her), was screened at major international film festivals and sold 5 million tickets at home.
However, some believe that its success was due to the death of Je-ha’s celebrated director father, Lee Doo-young (Kim Jae-chul, Love Your Enemy), on the eve of the film’s release. Among those is Je-ha himself, who has spent the past five years avoiding socialising in the industry and is unable to select his next project.
Thanks to their collaboration, Je-ha’s producer Bu Seung-won (Seo Hyun-woo, Uncle Samsik) has been fabulously successful in the interim, running Bu Films, a production company with posters for The Roundup, Exhuma and Hunt on its walls (films that are all produced by separate companies in real life).
Seung-won keeps trying to get Je-ha back into the fold, and his latest suggestion is a remake of Love in White, his father’s most beloved film.

Je-ha, who has a conflicted relationship with his father’s legacy and this film in particular, initially refuses to take the project on.
Following a repertory screening of Love in White, he is displeased to bump into the classic film’s leading actress Kim Jin-yeo (Ye Soo-jung, Revenant). This is because she had an affair with his father, and Je-ha believes that Love in White, which was made in the wake of his mother’s death, is the story of that illicit relationship.
But Jin-yeo tells him that the story was originally very different and that he should read the first draught.
Je-ha goes to his father’s old house and digs up that first draught, which was actually written by his mother. Because of this and a few other reasons, he agrees to adapt and direct the remake, but he asks Seung-won to find him a consultant for the terminal-illness aspect of the story.

Enter the bright and bubbly Lee Da-eum (Jeon, Vincenzo), a young woman who longs to be an actress but has precious little time to make that dream a reality. She has inherited her mother’s genetic illness and currently lives in a hospital.
Je-ha and Da-eum, who is an ardent fan of Love in White, happen to meet several times before Da-eum shows up as his consultant. The relationship becomes more complicated when Da-eum auditions for the lead part in the film, which is initially supposed to go to Seo-young.
The series begins in a cinema as Je-ha and Da-eum are the only two viewers at a screening who remain seated for the credits. Je-ha narrates that “just when we think the ending is here, that’s when life begins”, foreshadowing the narrative and thematic arcs of the series.
Our Movie is a story about death, whether it is grappling with one’s own mortality or coping with the loss of loved ones, as well as the things we leave behind.

But legacy is in the eye of the beholder. Lee Doo-young is a national treasure, whose work is beloved by viewers just like Da-eum, but his personal story leaves behind a more complicated legacy for his son Je-ha.
This is also a series about cinema and what stories mean to us. The show explores cinephilia and points its lens at the Korean film industry at a time when it is facing its greatest ever challenge, with record low receipts, vanishing financing and a host of other problems.
Speaking of lenses, the show strives for a hazy and dreamy cinematic aesthetic, in part achieved by its use of anamorphic lenses – not usually employed in K-dramas.
As the mild-mannered Je-ha, Namkoong is in comfortable if unchallenging territory, as the tight-lipped character does not require a great range of expressions.

Very much playing the foil as Da-eum, Jeon encompasses a large array of expressions and emotions in a performance that is spirited but also initially unbalanced, perhaps by design.
Je-has is likely to open up in coming episodes, while Da-eum should focus her emotional range as this sentimental tale of filmmaking unfolds.
