A baseball drama, a fantasy romance, a romantic melodrama and the star-studded return of one of Korea’s most celebrated writers feature in the last round of casting announcements before most of South Korea shuts down for this year’s extra-long Chuseok harvest holiday. Gift Kim Woo-bin has just returned to the small screen opposite Bae Suzy in the Netflix series Genie, Make a Wish and reports suggest that he may be following that up with Gift, a baseball-themed drama based on a webtoon. Kim has been offered the role of Jeong Min-young, a pitching coach at a professional baseball team, whose life takes a strange turn after a fire leaves him with special abilities. He makes a career change and becomes the kind head coach of the amateur baseball team at Deokcheon High School. Though his last drama role before Genie, Make a Wish was Black Knight in 2023, Kim appeared in a pair of feature films last year, the Netflix action comedy Officer Black Belt and Alienoid: Return to the Future. Gift could also reunite the star with Kim Kyu-tae, who directed him in the ensemble series Our Blues. The director last helmed the Netflix show The Trunk with Gong Yoo. Scheduled to air on tvN, Gift is aiming for a production start early next year. 2. Long Vacation Lee Se-young and Choo Young-woo have been approached to lead the coming Netflix series Long Vacation. This romance fantasy will tell the story of Demon No. 3375, who visits a seaside village in Korea for a holiday, where he meets and falls in love with a hotel worker. The demon soon finds himself torn between his identity and his burgeoning human emotions. Lee is known for shows such as The Law Cafe and his most recent credits include Motel California and last year’s Korea-Japan co-production What Comes After Love. Choo is wrapping up an exceedingly busy year that has seen him star in several well-received shows, including The Tale of Lady Ok, The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call, Mercy for None and Head Over Heels. Long Vacation will be directed by Lee Jung-hyo, known for Crash Landing on You and Doona!, while scripting duties fall to Lovestruck in the City and Our Blooming Youth writer Jung Hyun-sung. 3. In Your Brilliant Season Lee Sung-kyung and Chae Jong-hyeop have signed on to lead the MBC drama In Your Brilliant Season, which is expected to air in the first half of next year. Chae will play Chan Sun-woo, a man who lives life as though every day is a summer holiday, while Lee will portray Song Ha-ran, who shuts herself off from the world as though deep in a long, cold winter. Ha-ran is the head designer at the top fashion house Nana Atelier. Despite her seemingly perfect experience, she lives her life biting down a well of pain stemming from the loss of loved ones. Then, she meets the carefree Sun-woo, a character designer at a celebrated animation studio. After their chance meeting, chinks steadily begin to appear in Ha-ran’s armour. Handling the director’s reins will be Jung Sang-hee, who helmed the previous MBC production Fanletter, Please! with Choi Soo-young. Episodes are being written by Jo Sung-hee, known for Still 17. Also slated to join the series are Lee Mi-sook (Tempest) and Han Ji-hyun (The Penthouse). 4. Everyone Is Fighting Their Own Worthlessness My Mister and My Liberation Notes mastermind Park Hae-young is preparing her highly anticipated comeback, which is assembling an impressive list of actors. Among the reported names joining the show are Koo Kyo-hwan (D.P.), Go Youn-jung (Moving), Oh Jung-se (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay) and Park Hae-joon (When Life Gives You Tangerines), who previously appeared in My Mister. Also rumoured to be in the cast are Kang Mal-geum (Divorce Attorney Shin), Jo Woo-jin (Narco-Saints) and Han Sun-hwa (Work Later, Drink Now). Everyone Is Fighting Their Own Worthlessness will take place against the backdrop of the film industry and follow the professional and personal struggles and conflicts of its characters, who are contending with the concept of worthlessness. The series will be directed by Cha Young-hoon, whose credits include the hit series When the Camellia Blooms and Forecasting Love and Weather. Production is expected to begin this month, with an air date expected in 2026.
