Kim was born in Seoul, though he spent his formative years in Jeonju, a central city renowned for its culinary scene, where his father runs a cafe. He attended Jeonju University, which later invited him to be an honorary ambassador.

With his considerable height, steely eyes and sharp cheekbones, Kim was ideally suited for the runway and spent the first few years of his career as a model – a background that came in handy for his first film role in 2012, when he featured briefly in the fashion-themed crime comedy Runway Cop.
