Love is in the air – and undercover – in this month’s K-drama casting announcements, which find Korea’s top stars circling some novel twists on K-drama standards. Read on to find out more. 1. Nine to Six Park Min-young (Marry My Husband) and Yook Sung-jae of the K-pop outfit BTOB are in talks to lead the coming SBS drama Nine to Six, and representatives have confirmed the discussions. The project is an adaptation of the Chinese series The Rational Life. Park is eyeing the role of Kang Ji-yi, a lawyer working on the legal team of a car company who has sidelined romance to focus on her career. Yook is looking over the part of Han Seon-woo, a law school graduate turned jewellery designer. Mature beyond his years, he tends to act from the heart, unlike the cool-headed Ji-yi. Known for hits ranging from City Hunter to What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, Park was last on screen in the comedy caper Confidence Queen. Yook’s K-drama appearances include The Golden Spoon and last year’s The Haunted Palace. Nine to Six is the latest series from director Lee Hyung-min, who is known for popular shows like Strong Girl Bong-soon and Miss Night and Day. 2. Love Cloud After sharing the screen in Reborn Rich, one of the most successful K-dramas of all time, Song Joong-ki and Park Ji-hyun may reunite for the JTBC series Love Cloud, with agencies for both confirming that they are currently in talks to join the project. Song has been offered the part of Kang Woo-joo, who used to be a flight instructor and now works as an air traffic controller. Meanwhile, Park may take on the role of Ahn Ha-nee, a daredevil first officer who pilots planes for a commercial airline. The pair first met seven years ago when Ha-nee was earning her wings under Woo-joo’s instruction. Now, they reunite on Jeju Island. Star of Descendants of the Sun and Vincenzo, Song was last seen in the romantic drama My Youth, a rare ratings miss for the actor. Park has been going from strength to strength in recent years, appearing in commercial hits like Flex X Cop and critical ones such as You and Everything Else. 3. My Guilty Human Im Si-wan (Squid Game season 2) and Seol In-ah (Business Proposal) have been set as the leading stars of the tvN drama My Guilty Human, which is based on the popular web novel Why Don’t You Know She’s a Woman? – itself previously adapted as a webtoon of the same name. Im is set to play Yoon Yi-jun, the haughty heir of the all-powerful chaebol Taegang Group, who suddenly becomes a murder suspect. Seol will star as a woman who used to be a special forces officer; she then goes undercover as a male personal secretary to investigate Yi-jun. Aside from her murder investigation, she must also learn to deal with Yi-jun, who is a notoriously prickly boss. Mixing thrills, romance and workplace comedy, My Guilty Human should offer no shortage of guilty pleasures for K-drama fans. Following last summer’s Squid Game finale, Im was seen in the Kill Boksoon spin-off Mantis. Seol’s last role was in Oh My Ghost Clients. Im and Seol previously collaborated on the disaster film Emergency Declaration. 4. I’m Against My Romance Kim Jae-won (Hierarchy) may be stepping in to replace Lee Jong-suk, who passed on an offer to lead the coming series I’m Against My Romance. Before Lee, Choi Hyun-wook (Twinkling Watermelon) had declined the leading male role of a project that was initially announced three years ago. Kim’s agency confirmed that he is reviewing an offer to appear in the series, which follows the reunion of a man and woman who were each other’s first loves. Casting for the female lead remains up in the air after the role was turned down by Go Min-si. There has not been an update on who might fill the director’s chair, which was vacated by Lee Eung-bok (Descendants of the Sun, Sweet Home). The major reshuffle is not necessarily cause for concern, as individual projects tend to be at the mercy of flexible production schedules. Last year’s The Price of Confession, with Jeon Do-yeon and Kim Go-eun, is a perfect example of a project that was originally set up with a completely different director and stars (Song Hye-kyo and Han So-hee) and still became a buzzy show.
