Six years after breaking out in the Netflix smash Sweet Home, Go Youn-jung has tackled just about every genre the K-drama world has to offer, save for the most classic of all: the romantic comedy.

Go will finally remedy that this month when she returns to screens opposite Kim Seon-ho in Can This Love Be Translated?, a 12-part globe-trotting Netflix drama that reunites her with the Hong Sisters, the writing duo behind Alchemy of Souls.

Why we love her

Despite having blazed through all these genres before turning 30, Go has not been in the industry all that long. She debuted at 23, shortly after deciding to become an actress.

Go was initially focused on different artistic pursuits, studying contemporary art at Seoul Women’s University, where she had a chance to do a little amateur modelling. After appearing on the cover of the University Tomorrow magazine, a slew of entertainment agencies came calling.

It was her modelling career that first took off, when she took part in campaigns for the likes of Nike and Giorgio Armani. Later, she would become an ambassador for luxury houses, including Chanel. She used part of her modelling income to finance acting classes.

In those early days, she auditioned for Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite, but after failing to secure a role she realised she needed to apply herself more seriously to acting.

Her debut came soon after, with a supporting role as a single teenage mother in He Is Psychometric (2019). Part of what made her stand out early in her career was the sensitive social roles she took on; she also played a carer in Sweet Home and a young woman abused by her boyfriend in Law School.
