The nine-tailed-fox fantasy romcom template gets a lively workout in the bright and brisk No Tail to Tell, starring Kim Hye-yoon (Lovely Runner) as a jaded mythical being and Lomon (All of Us Are Dead) as a superstar football player whose destinies entwine.
A fantastical creature from East Asian mythology, the nine-tailed fox – known in Korea as a gumiho – is an entity that typically takes on the appearance of a beautiful woman to seduce men and consume their livers.


Kim plays Eun-ho, a far less bloodthirsty gumiho, who centuries earlier was a benevolent being helping humans accumulate good karma until she could be reincarnated as a human. Her friend and fellow gumiho achieves this dream before her and marries a human, only for tragedy to strike.
Distraught and disillusioned, Eun-ho abandons her quest for humanity and decides to use her special powers only for herself, being very careful not to commit any good deeds to tip the scales any further.
Now, she only grants the wishes of those who can afford to fund her lavish lifestyle, as she spends her time in luxury department stores, hypnotising people into spending the day with her before wiping their memories.
Despite not having any real friends, Eun-ho maintains this lonely existence until she crosses paths with young footballer Kang Si-yeol (Lomon). Si-yeol is a talented and flashy player, but it is his friend Hyun Woo-seok (Jang Dong-joo, Trigger) who appears to be destined for greatness.

Eun-ho, who is occasionally able to see glimpses of the future, confirms this. But one night, Woo-seok is hit by a car driven by one of Eun-ho’s clients, and the friends’ fates switch. When the hit-and-run results in a death – a direct consequence of her interference – Eun-ho is stripped of her powers.
Nine years later, Si-yeol has become a global football icon, and he has developed an ego worthy of his celebrity.
Meanwhile, Eun-ho wants to move to her own private island, but after a few years without granting wishes for cash, she is surprised to discover she can no longer fund this ambition. Thus, she seeks out the now very rich Si-yeol, who she figures owes her a favour.
One might assume that magical, liver-eating seductresses belong to the horror genre – and this was formerly true, as gumihos were generally the antagonists in cautionary tales about the dangers of desire. Yet in modern Korean media, that paradigm has been flipped as these mythical figures have become chiefly associated with small-screen romcoms, popping up in popular series such as Tale of the Nine-Tailed and My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho.

In No Tail to Tell, Eun-ho grants wishes for corrupt humans, one of whom – the hit-and-run driver – is punished for his selfish desires. Si-yeol, however, becomes a thorn in her side because there is nothing he wants from her – he is incorruptible.
In any case, Eun-ho’s punishment is likely to be short-lived. Lord Pagun (Joo Jin-mo, Unmasked) warns her of the error of her ways, but rather than censure her, he seems inclined to nudge her along a path of self-enlightenment to restore her desire for humanity.
If anything, Eun-ho has already been punishing herself, as her professed desires are short-sighted – she is materially fulfilled, but without genuine social connections, she is emotionally empty.
This being a fantasy K-drama, the path towards morality and being welcomed into the fold of humanity is naturally paved with romance. This is hinted at when the usually unflappable Eun-ho is thrown off balance by Si-yeol, who does not fear her and touches her hand.

As Eun-ho, Kim is already effortlessly charismatic, but it is in moments like these that she showcases her ability to comfortably switch between emotional registers.
The show’s peppy mix of fantasy and formula demands an affected lead performance, and Kim – a veteran of fantasy romances such as Extraordinary You – confidently bridges the gap between artifice and emotionality.
No Tail to Tell may not have a new tale to tell, but so far it is a lively and engaging one that is likely to please fans of classic K-dramas.
