On November 13, over 100 Hong Kong-based dancers will take to the stage to show the history of K-pop at the Korean Cultural Centre in Hong Kong’s “K-pop Dance Festival: The Evolution of K-pop” event.

At the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, 15 cover dance crews will go through the biggest K-pop hits since the 1990s to show the evolution of the various styles of dance used in their performances.

According to Park Soyeon, the manager of performing arts at Korean Cultural Centre (KCC), interest in K-pop dance has resulted in over 1,000 people registering to attend the event, reaching the maximum seating capacity allowed under Covid-19 restrictions.

The coronavirus pandemic itself is one of the reasons the Hong Kong KCC decided to put a major focus on K-pop fans to express their love through dance.

“We all know the K-pop community is really big and popular in Hong Kong, but because of the pandemic we can’t invite artists from Korea, so we decided to create an opportunity for fan dancers to participate,” said Park. “Korean culture is pervasive in Hong Kong, but because of the social situation in 2019 and the pandemic outbreak in 2020, it’s been tough. Thankfully, the situation now is better so we’re resuming events.”
