Taeyeon of Girls’ Generation on EP What Do I Call You: it’s got that kind of moody, yet ‘cool’ girl vibe, K-pop star says

  • ‘I’ve been able to start finding my voice,’ says Taeyeon, who attributes her success in 13 years in K-pop to her desire always to show a new side of herself
  • That is seen in the surprising indie-pop sound of her EP What Do I Call You, a whimsical, sophisticated six-track album with a rare co-writing credit for her

For many, 2020 has been quite a mood. So it’s fitting that, when asked to sum up in one word her mini album What Do I Call You, K-pop star Taeyeon says: “Mood.”

The South Korean star’s fourth EP arrived on December 15, ending the year on a high. Yet the Girls’ Generation singer had spent much of 2020 concerned she wouldn’t be able to come up with something worthwhile to share, she says in an email interview with the Post.

“To be honest, it was a pretty difficult year – and for many reasons I was a bit scared,” she says of trying to match expectations, both those of her fans and herself.

“I was first and foremost worried about whether I could create a satisfactory album, but I found that – yet again – the process of creating an album in and of itself was the greatest medicine for me.”

What Do I Call You, which is fronted by the quirky yet chill single of the same name, is a typical Taeyeon album in that it’s comforting, whimsical, and sophisticated, with five original tracks plus earlier release Happy bolstered by the 31-year-old’s immense vocal talent.
