Costumes based on K-drama Squid Game may be popular this Halloween, but K-pop artists have been leaning into the spirit of the spooky season with some more traditional looks.
Though many K-pop acts regularly dress up for Halloween, 2021 has seen a particular trend among artists of releasing songs and videos that incorporate monsters and references to the occult.
In the week leading up to Halloween, boy bands NCT 127 and Tomorrow X Together (TXT) each dropped a new, seasonally satisfying release.
NCT 127’s song Favorite (Vampire) was released on October 25. In their music video for the song, band members were transformed into supernatural beings.


TXT dropped a music video for their song Frost, which was released in May on The Chaos Chapter: Freeze.
The new video features mystical moments and elements as the band travel through a portal to a new realm, where they encounter a mysterious character who shows them a series of visions.


The same day that NCT 127 shared Favorite with the world, a new girl group named BugABoo released a music video for their first single, also called BugABoo, which featured the six members facing down a variety of monsters and ghosts.
Hauntings have been a popular theme for K-pop stars in recent months, with the likes of long-time hitmaker Sunmi’s July release You Can’t Sit With Us featuring zombies in its music video.


Meanwhile, rookie girl group Purple Kiss released a song called Zombie in September.


Beyond these music videos with their Halloween references, K-pop in 2021 has featured a lot of sci-fi themes and concepts, with numerous artists seen travelling to space or engaging with virtual realities in their videos.
