New K-pop girl groups IVE, NMixx, GOT The Beat and Viviz create buzz in the early weeks of 2022

  • IVE and GOT The Beat topped South Korean charts and had viral global hits with their debut songs, and Viviz and NMixx will be hoping to do the same
  • Dreams Come True continued the success of girl group Aespa, and two other established groups, StayC and veterans Apink, will both release albums in February

K-pop in the early weeks of 2022 has been a win for girl groups, especially newer acts on the South Korean music scene whose high-energy releases have been big hits.

Some brand new girl groups have enjoyed instant success with the songs they released.

Two of the earliest K-pop hits of 2022 came from IVE, who topped the charts in South Korea – and had a viral global hit – with their debut single, Eleven, released at the end of 2021, and from GOT The Beat, a group featuring already-active K-pop stars, who kicked off the year with Step Back.
Aespa followed up the success of their singles Next Level and Savage, both released last year, with their remake of S. E. S’s 1990s hit Dreams Come True, which has also proven popular. The group released their first song in 2019.

The wins have kept coming for K-pop girl groups in February.

The debut of Viviz, a spin-off trio featuring former members of now-defunct group GFriend, generated a lot of buzz. The release of their debut EP, Beam of Prism, on February 9 marked a new stage in the careers of Viviz’ members after the sudden disbanding of GFriend last year.

Other popular and rising girl groups are expecting to add to this trend with upcoming releases.

February 14 will see the high-profile release of Horn, a 10th anniversary album from K-pop hitmakers Apink.

And StayC, who released hits ASAP and Stereotype in 2021, will release an EP, Youngluv.com, on February 21.

The month will also see the debut of NMixx, a new group launched by the label JYP Entertainment.

JYP has a history of girl groups debuting to major success. Nmixx, styled NMIXX, are the first girl group JYP has launched since Itzy debuted in 2019.

The new group will release their first song, Ad Mare, on February 22.

Beyond girl groups, popular female soloists such as Taeyeon, of Girls’ Generation, and actor-singer Bae Suzy also have releases planned in February.
