After a huge year, Korean drama still has a few more tricks up its sleeve for the last month of 2021. December will welcome Disney+’s first K-drama, Korea’s first moon-set drama and a host of thrillers, period dramas and tales of romance. Here are eight to catch: 1. Our Beloved Summer Parasite’s Choi Woo-shik and Kim Da-mi of Itaewon Class are teaming up for a very different kind of story in the romantic comedy Our Beloved Summer . The young stars will play the naive and free-spirited illustrator Choi Woong and the adaptable public relations professional Kook Yeon-soo, a couple that broke up 10 years previously. During their time together in high school, they filmed a documentary and now it is becoming popular. Even though they don’t want to, the pair are forced to reunite in front of the cameras. Sweet Home ’s Kim Sung-cheol plays the director of their documentary. (SBS, December 6) 2. Artificial City December’s high society drama looks to be Artificial City from JTBC, featuring Soo Ae ( Athena: Goddess of War ) and Kim Kang-woo ( Woman of 9.9 Billion ). Soo plays Yoon Hae-hee, the second daughter-in-law of the family-run Sungjin Group. She dumped her long-term boyfriend to marry corporate heir Jung Joon-hyuk (Kim Kang-woo) and now works at an art gallery. Though Joon-hyuk was born out of wedlock, Hae-hee is angling to make him the next Korean president. To do so, she teams up with a chief prosecutor candidate and wages war with her in-laws. (JTBC, December 8) 3. Bad and Crazy The Uncanny Counter director Yoo Sun-dong is teaming up with Lee Dong-wook of Life and Squid Game ’s Wi Ha-joon for the police thriller Bad and Crazy . Lee plays Soo-yeol, an officer who will do anything to succeed, whose life takes a turn when Wi’s K, a righteous officer who dreams of being a hero, enters the spotlight. Han Ji-eun ( My Roommate Is a Gumiho ) also stars as a police lieutenant on the drug squad. (TvN, December 17) 4. Bulgasal: Immortal Souls Lee Jin-wook ( Sweet Home ) stars in Bulgasal: Immortal Souls as Dan Hwal, a military officer who became immortal while carrying out a mission 600 years ago. Kwon Na-ra ( Itaewon Class ) plays Min Sang-woon, a character who used to be immortal but has now been reincarnated as a human, and lives in hiding after a tragic event, seeking revenge. Lee Joon ( Luck-Key ) plays Ok Eul-tae, another immortal character who enjoys his powers, while Gong Seung-yeon of the acclaimed indie film Aloners plays Dan Sol, Dan Hwal’s wife in the past. (TvN, December 18) 5. Snowdrop Disney+, which just launched in Korea a few weeks ago, will debut its first Korean drama in December. Following his role in D.P. , Jung Hae-in stars in the ’80s-set drama Snowdrop alongside Blackpink’s Jisoo, in her first leading role on screen. The story takes place in the tumultuous political climate of 1987, with Jung playing a student protester who hides in a female dormitory, where he is harboured by Jisoo’s character. A burgeoning romance develops between them as political tensions rise around them in this new series from Jo Hyun-tak and Yoo Hyun-mi, the director-and-writer team behind Sky Castle . (JTBC, Disney+; December 18) 6. When Flowers Bloom, I Think of the Moon When Flowers Bloom, I Think of the Moon , with Yoo Seung-ho of Memorist and Lee Hyeri of K-pop group Girl’s Day and My Roommate Is a Gumiho , sees director Hwang In-hyuk return to period dramas for the first time since Sungkyungkwan Scandal . Set in the period of the late Joseon era when there were strong alcohol prohibition laws, Nam Young (Yoo) works as an officer for the Saheonbu, a government outfit charged with cracking down on those who break prohibition. Ambitious and handsome, Nam Young travels to Hanyang (modern day Seoul) to pursue his goals, but finds himself in trouble when he meets Kang Ro-seo (Hyeri), the daughter of a poor family who has become their breadwinner by illegally brewing alcohol. (KBS2, December 20) 7. The Silent Sea Earlier this year Netflix gave us Space Sweepers , Korea’s first space-set film. Now the streamer is preparing to launch Korea’s first ever moon-set drama. Featuring Bae Doona, Gong Yoo and Lee Joon in the main cast, this eight-part drama promises to boldly go where no other K-drama has gone before. The story is set in a near future where the earth’s water and food supplies are threatened by desertification. A team is formed by the space agency to travel to the moon and retrieve a mysterious sample from an abandoned research station. Hooked on Squid Game? The 15 best K-dramas to stream on Netflix The Silent Sea is produced by actor Jung Woo-sung and directed Choi Hang-yong, who makes his commercial debut and whose 2014 short film The Sea of Tranquillity was adapted for the new drama. (Netflix, December 24) 8. Tracer Following Run On , Im Si-wan returns to screens late in December as Hwang Dong-Ju, the chief of division 5 at the National Tax Service. He traces money along with his teammate Seo Hye-young (Ko Asung, Snowpiercer ). Park Yong-woo ( Priest ) plays the boss of his division while Son Hyun-joo ( Hide and Seek ) features as the ambitious director of the regional tax office. (Wavve, December)
