In an act of desperation, a struggling writer steals someone’s manuscript to break into the publishing world in Miraculous Brothers. His fraudulent debut novel is a thunderous success. Trouble is, that is not all he gets in this peppy supernatural drama-thriller starring Jung Woo and Bae Hyun-sung.
The story begins with a chase sequence and, since this is a Korean genre series, that means it is night and it is raining cats and dogs.


A young man is hounded in the sinuous alleys of Seoul by mysterious assailants. During his escape, he jumps at the same time as lightning strikes. Mid-air, he disappears, reappearing above a different street mere feet in front of a moving car.
BAM! He collides with the car, leaving the man driving it aghast. This is wannabe writer Yook Dong-joo (Jung Woo, Mad for Each Other). Dong-joo rushes the man to hospital, where he lies in a coma. After answering all the necessary questions he drives home, forgetting about the youngster’s backpack in the back seat.

That bag contains several items, including a copy of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil and a manuscript ominously titled The Almighty Is Dead. Dong-joo, who works as a delivery man while toiling away on failed novels, is transfixed by the tome. He agonises over whether to return it or claim it as his own. His desire to finally make it wins out.
He signs a publishing contract with Lee Myung-suk (Lee Ki-woo), who was his friend as a youth but who he now despises on account of his extreme success and smug attitude. Two months pass, and the book is released to rave reviews and blockbuster sales.
The young man, who we later learn is named Kang-san (Bae Hyun-sung, Our Blues), finally wakes up from his coma. Luckily for Dong-joo, he does not remember anything.

Though his identity remains unclear, Kang-san’s abilities soon manifest themselves. He visits a dying woman in hospital and shocks her daughter when he communicates the mother’s dying thoughts to her.
He also has the ability to send her disagreeable brother flying into the wall. Dong-joo bears witness to these freakish sights.
Meanwhile, Park Hyun-soo (Park Yoo-rim), the detective who took Dong-joo’s statement, pieces together murders taking place around town.
A serial killer with a mysterious mark on his hand is targeting a group of corrupt bigwigs who all frequent the same private high society bar. The man is also somehow connected to Kang-san and his manuscript.
Plagiarism is a significant issue that plagues Korean society. Stories of novelists stealing work or professors stealing their students’ dissertations and research are extremely commonplace.

Miraculous Brothers exists in that world – but while Dong-joo goes through a moral dilemma when presented with an opportunity to steal someone’s work, he does not experience much in the way of repercussions.
He is presented as a somewhat flawed character that we are still supposed to root for. He is in debt and frustrated by his failures, but he does not even have a dying relative in need of an operation to help us sympathise with him.
While his actions suck him into a dark supernatural world likely filled with dangers to come, it does not feel like he will be held accountable for his blatant act of plagiarism. This is not a few sentences we are talking about; he swiped a full manuscript lock, stock and barrel.

Kang-san is not your average super-powered individual, he is all of them combined. Beyond teleporting, telepathic communication and moving people with his mind, he can also stop time, feel people’s emotions, transfer them to other people and in some cases see the future, each time with glowing blue eyes shining through the screen.
Between all the supernatural elements, the murder investigation, the corruption and all of Dong-joo’s personal issues, there is simply too much going on in Miraculous Brothers for us to be able to focus on where the story is trying to guide us.
Not to mention the Nietzschean moral philosophy that we have not even dug into yet.

What will hopefully anchor all these elements is the bromance that has been teased between Dong-joo and Kang-san – the “miraculous brothers” of the title. Jung and Bae bring very different energies to their respective roles, which could make for an engaging mix going forward.
While the world-building is so far pretty hokey, the genre elements within have some decent entertainment value. Anyone who enjoyed the Korean action sci-fi film Haunters, which has a similar tone, could do worse than to tune in.
