South Korean streaming platform Coupang Play appears to be stepping up its drama series output, with a pair of enticing new projects among our round-up of the latest Korean drama casting news.

1. Hide

Coupang Play has confirmed the cast for its upcoming project Hide.

Mine lead actress Lee Bo-young, also recently seen in a supporting role in See You in My 19th Life, will portray Na Moon-young, a woman searching for her missing husband Cha Sung-jae, played by Lee Mu-saeng (The Glory).

Lee Chung-ah (One Dollar Lawyer) will play their neighbour Ha Yeon-joo, while Lee Min-jae (Crash Course in Romance) will appear as Do Min-joo, a man who may hold the key to Sung-jae’s mysterious disappearance.

Handling the directors’ reins will be Kim Dong-hwi, known for Fight for My Way and The Tale of Nokdu. The production will also include staff from the recent Netflix hit The Glory.

Hide, which is based on British TV series Keeping Faith, which aired on the BBC, is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2024.

2. Hash’s Shinru

Ahn Bo-hyun, who was last seen in See You in My 19th Life opposite Shin Hye-sun, is considering taking on a lead role in the forthcoming historical drama Hash’s Shinru.

Taking place during the reign of King Sejong, the fourth regent of the Korean Joseon dynasty, the series will depict the romance between Crown Prince Lee Hyang, a lover of astrology who looks to the stars, and mysterious woman Hae Too, who sees the future.

The series is based on a webtoon, the original writer of which will directly adapt his story for the screen.

The role of Lee Hyang was previously offered to Kim Seon-ho (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha), who turned it down.

Ahn will soon be back on the big screen in another period epic, Noryang: The Sea of Death, the final instalment in the Admiral Lee Sun-shin trilogy launched by Roaring Currents.

He is also set to appear opposite Im Yoon-ah in the film 2 O’Clock Date, in another role that was first offered to Kim Seon-ho.

3. Melo Movie

Parasite actor Choi Woo-shik has received an offer to appear in the new K-drama Melo Movie, and is considering it positively.

Should he sign on, the role would reunite him with Lee Na-eun, the writer of the acclaimed romantic drama Our Beloved Summer, in which Choi appeared alongside Kim Da-mi. Lee is also known for the series Falling in Love.

Beyond the fact that it will be a melodrama combining romance and comedy, little is currently known about the project.

Choi will soon be seen in the coming Netflix drama Murder DIEary, a thriller in which he appears alongside Son Suk-ku and Lee Hee-joon.

The actor also recently completed the big-budget sci-fi film Wonderland, which stars Chinese actress Tang Wei, Gong Yoo, Park Bo-gum, Bae Suzy and Hong Kong actress Nina Paw Hee-ching.

4. Family Planning

Another Coupang Play drama gearing up for production is Family Planning, a sci-fi-tinged thriller that has sent out casting offers to Bae Doona (Stranger), Ryu Seung-bum (Moving) and Baek Yoon-shik (Inside Men).

The series is described as a thriller set in a world where a technology known as brain hacking is used to punish criminals, forcing them to confront the pain they brought on their victims.

Recently seen in the art-house films Broker and Next Sohee, Bae will be back on screens in Zac Snyder’s Hollywood sci-fi tent pole Rebel Moon, which will launch the first of two instalments on Netflix at the end of the year.

Actor Ryu Seung-bum, known for films such as Crying First and The Berlin File, recently appeared on screen for the first time in four years. He made a memorable appearance as the super-powered villain Frank in the breakout Disney+ hit Moving.

Baek is a familiar face to Korean film fans through modern classics such as Save the Green Planet and The President’s Last Bang, but he has been less active on the small screen. His last drama role was in 2019’s Vagabond.
