Romantic K-dramas sometimes come under fire for setting unrealistic standards. They present a version of South Korea that does not exist, populated by handsome male leads – often shining pillars of society – who fall for hard-working young women.

These stories are modern Korean versions of Cinderella. But Cinderella is a fairy tale – suspension of disbelief is baked into its DNA. Perhaps that is why fantasy romantic dramas make up such a large portion of romantic K-dramas.
