Netflix K-drama midseason recap: Frankly Speaking – Go Kyung-pyo, Kang Han-na struggle through confused fantasy comedy

  • Go Kyung-pyo’s character can’t help but speak his mind, which seems like fertile ground for comedy, but the conceit is poorly deployed and the show lacks humour
  • Characters either fall by the wayside or add little to the story, and a lack of chemistry between the two leads makes it hard to care about this romantic comedy

Go Kyung-pyo as Song Ki-baek, a man who cant help but speak his mind, and Kang Han-na as struggling reality TV show writer On Woo-joo, in a still from Frankly Speaking. Netflix’s new K-drama has some of the ingredients of a good romcom, but doesn’t deliver.

After developing an unusual condition that compels him to speak his mind, usually at the most inopportune times, TV news announcer Song Ki-baek (Go Kyung-pyo) loses his job and with it his shot at landing his dream evening anchor job.

The only other person who knows about his condition is reality TV show writer On Woo-joo (Kang Han-na), who works for the same network as him.
