Like many period political dramas, director Shin Yeon-shick’s Uncle Samsik is leading us towards an ending we already know will happen. Much like the recent film 12.12: The Day, the events of this story will culminate in a coup d’état.
In contrast to that hit film, this drama is not based on real events, although its story does play out against a real historical background.
As the story jumps back and forth between military interrogations and the events leading up to them, we know it will end with a failed coup d’état. What we do not know is how this coup came about and exactly who was involved and why.
Our lead characters Park Doo-sik (Song Kang-ho, Parasite), who is better known by his nickname Samsik (“three meals”), and Kim San (Byun Yo-han, Mr. Sunshine) are being questioned separately for their purported roles in this coup, while the bulk of the story leading up to it chronicles their relationship.
